Even before OCD strikes, we often come with attachment wounds from our childhoods that leave us feeling vulnerable, unlovable and ill equipped. Sometimes specific events that happened in our lives continue to plague us and hijack our ability to differentiate the here and now from what has already happened. Past events can heavily impact our beliefs about ourselves and how we interpret our relationships and safety in the world and can contribute to narratives used by OCD to reinforce doubt and confusion. The past does not have to control how we experience our present or future.
I am an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) trained therapist and utilize this evidence based treatment for trauma to aid clients in addressing distressing past experiences as they regain trust in who they are. EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that helps clients reprocess traumatic memories and support the strengthening of adaptive beliefs . Through bilateral stimulation, similar to the eye movements in REM sleep, individuals are able to separate past experiences from the present as we reprocess traumatic events.
